Delores Aleen Hammonds, nee Roberts, of Steelville, MO, was born on Thursday, February 21, 1935 to Clarence Earl Roberts and Gladys Dema Roberts, nee Briggs. She passed away at her home on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at the age of 89 years, 1 month and 3 days.
Delores was born near Steelville, MO and graduated from Cherryville High School in the Class of 1952. She married her high school sweetheart, Joseph C. Hammonds, on July 6, 1954 and to this union three sons were born. They first made their home in Texas while Joe served in the United States Air Force. Then they moved to St. Louis before returning to Steelville to make their home and raise their family. Delores was raised on a farm and enjoyed the outdoors, her flowers, fishing on their pontoon, taking walks to the mailbox with her grandkids and taking the kids to Walmart every Thursday. She had a huge garden every year where she canned and cooked everything that would grow. She loved to cook for anyone that would eat. No one would leave hungry.
Delores worked at Brown Shoe Factory for over 35 years, until it closed. That left more time to spend with her grandchildren making fond memories. She played wiffle ball with them, took them to the creek, attended their sporting events and made sure they had fresh biscuits and gravy every morning. She was an active member of the Sligo Methodist Church where she often played the piano. She loved to sing, play her organ and listen to Alan Jackson hymns. She also loved her little dog, Zipper. Most of all, she loved and always cared for her family.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Joe Hammonds; parents Clarence and Gladys Roberts; parents-in-law Lawrence and Anna Hammonds; sister Koradine (Tom) Rhinehart; and brother-in-law Jack Hammonds.
Delores will be sadly missed by her sons Rick (Cindy) Hammonds, Steve (Tammy) Hammonds and Rodney Hammonds all of Steelville, MO; 5 grandchildren: Matt (Sarah) Hammonds, Mike (Sarah) Hammonds, Morgan London and Megan Hammonds all of Steelville, MO and Mark (Melissa) Hammonds of Sullivan, MO; 7 great grandchildren: Huntley, Hutson, Lila, Walker, Blakely, Weston and Wrenley; sister Helen Roberts of Steelville, MO; nephews Ken (Kris) Rhinehart, Eldon (Cheryl) Rhinehart and sister-in-law Carol Hammonds.
